Saimaa Fisheries Research and Aquaculture – Aquaculture production The main function of the Saimaa aquaculture station is to preserve endangered valuable fish species and produce their eggs and larvae for breeding and restocking.
Eggs and young larvae are the main products, most being delivered to private fish hatcheries and extensive fish ponds. Landlocked salmon (Salmo salar m. sebgo) and Arctic charr (salvelinus alpinus) are cultivated for the Vuoksi water system, together with other endangered species in the area such as brown trout (Salmo trutta), whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus), grayling (Thymallus thymallus) and pikeperch (Sander lucioperca), and also imported species or morphs of Atlantic salmon (River Neva sock), lake trout and rainbow trout. The fish health class is P0. Research on stocking management in lakes and rivers plays an important role at the Saimaa aquaculture station.
