Cultivated species The national aquaculture stations have 16 species or morphs of fish in production, comprising over 70 genetically different stocks or populations specific to a certain water body. Information of the origin of the stocks and individual farming practices is enetred in the aquaculture register, which also contains scientific information on the genetics of the stocks.

| Male Saimaa Arctic charr. | Most of the fish stocks in cultivation are endangered in their natural state. Their conservation status is determined by various national and international commitments and decisions. Aquaculture also deals with species that are not threatened or native but are generally used for stocking purposes throughout the country to improve recreational fishing.
