Capacity building for the development of cold water fish farming in Vietnam The first rainbow trout farm in Vietnam was established through the joint efforts of Finnish expertise and Research Institute for Aquaculture No-1 (RIA-1) in Lao Cai Province in 2004. The pilot farm has served as a model for numerous private farms, and it provides fish fingerlings and technical assistance to an increasing number of fish farmers.

Goals
To build up capacity of Research Institute for Aquaculture No-1 to support the fast growing cold water aquaculture sector in Vietnam
Benefits
Mountainous areas of Vietnam have significant cold water recourses. Former attempts to develop aquaculture on these areas have failed due to slow growth and survival of temperate and warm water species used. However, farming of coldwater species have rapidly become an important source of livelihood on these needy areas.
