Developing Reindeer husbandry and Reindeer meat market Reindeer husbandry is a significant rural business in Northern Finland. Apart from other Nordic countries Finnish reindeer husbandry is not exclusively bounded to Saami. The business is supported by numerous instruments. The amount and the basis for subsidies vary among Nordic countries. In Finland and Sweden the subsidy policy is based on EU legislation, but Norway may apply national regulations in supporting reindeer husbandry.
The biggest challenge for Finnish reindeer husbandry is the low profitability of reindeer farms. However, there is a great variation between the farms; some are very profitable, whereas others are not. Many farms are also diversified and various business activities are run in parallel to reindeer husbandry. The reindeer meat processing is concentrated in Finland. There are numerous small-sized enterprises, which process and sell reindeer meat products. However, the major part of annual meat production is processed by few large companies.
The goals of the project
First goal is to identify the subsidizing instruments in different Nordic countries and to analyze their impacts on reindeer husbandry and reindeer meat market.
Second goal is to identify the critical points in the supply chain of reindeer meat and to analyze the magnitude of horizontal co-operation between reindeer farms. The aim is to model impacts of co-operation and information on the efficiency of supply chain.
Third goal is to improve profitability of reindeer farms by evaluating factors associated with good profits. In the study successful farms are compared to less successful ones.
