Value Chain of Reindeer Meat

A limited availability of grazing grounds of reindeer cattle constrains the production of reindeer meat. Finns consume annually about 70 kg meat. Less than 1 % of that is reindeer meat.

Annually reindeer meat is produced about 2,5 million kg. Two third of that is processed in food industry and traded to catering or grocery sector.  Considerable amount of meat is processed as convenience meals.

One third of annual production is sold directly to consumers or consumed by reindeer herders. The share of value added products is low in direct sells.
