The structure of the register

Data on the fish stocks found in the lakes and rivers of Finland are located and coded according to a numerical drainage basin database. Fresh waters in Finland form 74 main watersheds with a combined surface area exceeding 200 km². These watersheds are further subdivided into approximately 6,000 drainage basins. Finnish sea zones along the Baltic coast have a numerical division of 93 parts, which are used for coding data on fish stocks in coastal areas. The distribution and status of the species are visualised with coloured theme maps, produced using the Geographical Information System (GIS) and ArcView GIS software.

The status of each population is assessed and classified for each location, in relation to three themes:

1) the history of the population
(classes of origin: indigenous, mixed, introduced)

2) its survival probability (degree of threat)
(category of threat: endangered, vulnerable, declining, rare, data-deficient, low risk, not evaluated) and

3) its current self-maintenance ability, or reproduction capability
(classes of self-maintenance: self-maintaining, supported by stockings, dependent on stockings)
