Assesment of fish resources

The state of the economically most important fish stocks, as well as the factors affecting it, is evaluated in this research programme. Information is needed in the management of fish stocks, for example, when specifying catch quotas or when assessing other regulations in fishing.

The programme is made up of 20 projects, most of which are stock assessments. The following fish stocks are continuously monitored:

1. Baltic herring, sprat, cod, flounder – Baltic Sea

2. salmon, brown trout – Baltic Sea and the rivers flowing into it, the rivers Teno and Näätämö that flow into the Arctic Ocean

3. whitefish, pikeperch (zander), perch and pike – Baltic sea coastal and archipelago areas

4. freshwater fish communities and the vendace found in the Bay of Bothnia.

Stock estimates, predictions and guidelines are drawn up annually. The results can be found in the Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery Series of the Official Statistics of Finland (SVT).

Monitoring and international cooperation

Fish stocks are assessed through continuous monitoring and statistics on catches. Most of the monitoring is based on samples from the catches of professional fishermen.

Stock estimates of Baltic herring, sprat, cod and salmon are drawn up by assessment groups in the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES). The other stocks are assessed in The Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute.
