Monitoring of Baltic herring, sprat, cod and flounder stocks

The regular and continuous monitoring of Baltic herring, sprat, cod and flounder stocks is producing estimations and predictions of the state of these stocks. The project is also increasing biological knowledge of these stocks and the factors affecting them, and of the ecosystem of the Baltic Sea.

Regular assessment of stocks is one of the tasks that the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has given to the FGFRI, and this requires liaising with the relevant international contacts. Stock assessments are also requested by European Union fishery policy.

Stock estimations are made annually by the working groups of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES) . The ICES gives recommendations to the European Commission, which settles the national catch quotas every year in conjunction with Member States and Russia.

Cooperation

The data needed for the programme includes information from EU sample-collecting projects, the FGFRIs coastal research stations and catch statistics. The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is the primary user of the results, and the ICES and national and international scientific communities are also important cooperation partners.
