Migrant fish restoration on managed rivers – benefit valuation Restoration of migrating fish stocks would benefit the anglers and wider population through the existence values. The objective is to explore the opinions towards restoration of migratory fish stocks and to estimate the value of benefits from the projects in Finland. Project continues the pilot study done as a part of an older part of the project Migratory fish return into the River Iijoki, in which the contingent valuation method was applied to assess the benefit and economic value of the fish return to the non-local anglers’. Current situation at the river Iijoki was supported by less than 10% of the respondents of the pilot study (N=179), whereas the fish way alternative was supported by 85% and over transfer and restocking alternative 5% of the respondents.
The results indicate that the recovery of salmon stock into the river Iijoki would produce over a period of ten years, at least a million euro additional benefit for non-local anglers. More reliable results would demand wider data that would represent all the anglers of the managed rivers.

Goals
Restoration of migrating fish stocks would benefit the anglers and wider population through the existence values. The objective is to explore the opinions towards restoration of migratory fish stocks and to estimate the value of benefits from the projects in Finland. The research will be carried out by applying contingent valuation and choice experiment methods.
Benefits
The results will benefit the decision makers and authorities and others who are interested and need information about the benefits and economic value of programs that aim to restore migratory fish stocks in Finland. For instance, assessment of these kinds of restoration projects by applying the cost-benefit analysis requires information about the created economic values.
