Tagging fish Tagging fish is one of the most basic methods in research into fish. Tagging provides us with information on the migration, growth, and mortality of fish and the profitability of fish stocking. This information is needed, among others, in the planning of stocking and fishing. All the recaptured tags in Finland are processed in the Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute.

| Carlin tagging. Photo: Matti Naarminen | The success of tagging studies is usually entirely dependent on cooperation with fishermen. It is important for the fishermen to return all the tags they find and to provide as much information they can on the tagged fish. The tags can be posted, free of charge, to the address FIN-KALANTUTKIMUS 33333.
The Carlin tag is the most popular identification tag for fish. In Finland, about 70000 fish are marked with the Carlin marker every year. Fishermen return about 5000 tags each year. Tagged fishes annually and by species.
