Ermine

Track index (tracks/10 km/24 hours) of the ermine in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.

The average nationwide track density of ermine (Mustela erminea) in 2008 was nearly the same as the year before. The contemporary abundance of the ermine is almost half of what it was 20 years ago. The population development and region distribution of the ermine is also area-specific. Track densities decreased from the previous year in southern and central Finland, but increased in northern Finland. The squares with the highest track densities are found exclusively in Lapland this year. Any conclusions about long-term changes in the ermine population are complicated by the fact that track densities taken in the early years of triangle censusing (1989-1990) were exceptionally high.

Track index (tracks/10 km/24 hours) of ermine from 1989-2008, by game district.
