European otter

Track index (tracks/10 km/24 hours) of the European otter in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.

The track density of the European otter (Lutra lutra) decreased from 2007 and is now slightly lower than the average. This does not change the fact that the otter has become more numerous during the 20-year censusing period. The regional changes from the past year are diverse, but some trends have regularity. Track densities increased in central Finland, but declined in southern areas and Lapland. Monitoring track densities of the otter in forest landscapes is problematic, due to the living habits of the species. With otters, several other factors in addition to changes in population density can affect snow tracks, so results should be interpreted with caution.

Track index of the European otter (tracks/10 km/24h) in 1989-2008, by game district.
