Fox

Track index (tracks/10 km/24h) of foxes in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.

The track density of foxes (Vulpes vulpes) increased by 25% over most of Finland. Small declining areas were found in eastern Finland and northeastern Lapland. As has been noted in previous years, an area with much lower track density was observed in eastern Finland. No valid explanation for this phenomenon has been discovered. Despite the increase in track density, the density was still significantly lower than the long-term average. In many game districts in southern and central Finland the fox track densities were the lowest in the 20-year triangle monitoring. The highest track densities were found once again in southeastern Finland.

Track index of the fox (tracks/10 km/24 h) in 1989-2008, by game district.
