Least weasel Track index (tracks/10 km/24 hours) of the least weasel in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.
The track density of the least weasel (Mustela nivalis) decreased by almost a third from 2007, and the density is only half of the long-term average. The track density increased in central and northern Finland, much like the ermine. In southernmost Finland the track density declined, in places dramatically. Even though the surface area of the sharp decline is narrow, it has a strong impact on the overall density of the least weasel in Finland, because the abundance of the population is found in southern Finland. This year’s location of squares with the highest density of least weasel tracks implies that the population has moved further north.
Track index of the least weasel (tracks/10 km/24 h) in 1989-2008, by game district.
