Pine marten

Track index (tracks/10 km/24 h) of the pine marten in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.

The pine marten (Martes martes) population increased moderately from that of the previous winter, and the track density recorded in the whole country was close to the long-term average. Areas of track density growth were scattered relatively evenly around the country. The few areas with a declining track density were also located all around Finland. A larger area of declining track density was observed in central eastern Finland. The areas with strongest populations are located in southeastern Finland and northern Lapland. In the game districts of Oulu and Lapland, the track densities are among the highest pine martin densities found during the censusing period, but in other areas densities are considered average.

Track index of the pine marten (tracks/10 km/24h) in 1989-2008, by game district.
