White-tailed deer

Track index (tracks/10 km/24 hours) of the white-tailed deer in 50 km x 50 km squares in the winter of 2008. Significant changes between 2007 and 2008 are presented in smaller maps.

The track density of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) was nearly the same as last year, and significantly higher than the long-time average. The white-tailed deer population continues to grow in its core distribution area, but the distribution has not widened substantially. Population changes between the winters of 2007 and 2008 show no regional specification. On the game management district level, the track density is clearly highest in Varsinais-Suomi; it is over three times that of the moose in the region. (It is always good to remember, however, that a difference in track density does not necessarily mean a true abundance difference.)

Track index of the white-tailed deer (tracks/10 km/24 h) in the game management districts of southern Häme, northern Häme, Satakunta, Uusimaa and Varsinais-Suomi Finland in 1989-2008.
