Saimaa ringed seal

(Phoca hispida saimensis), saimaannorppa (FI), saimenvikare (SWE)

The Saimaa ringed seal is one of the most endangered seal species in the world. Today the greatest threats to the Saimaa ringed seal population are caused by fishing, splintering of their habitats and warming of winters. The Finnish Game and Fisheries Research Institute acts as a cooperation partner in different research projects related to Saimaa ringed seals.
