Central tasks of the FGFRI Fish research
- To assess and forecast the state of fish stocks for their sustainable exploitation
- To study the environmental requirements of fish and crabs and the effects of environmental changes on the management requirements of fishing waters
- To produce information on the effects of fishing and the management of fishing waters on fish stocks
Game and reindeer research
- To assess game populations for the purposes of sustainable hunting
- To study environmental factors affecting game populations, interspecific interaction and hunting
- To produce information about reindeer and the condition of reindeer pastures for ecologically sustainable reindeer farming.
Socioeconomic research
- To develop the livelihoods in the fish and reindeer economy and produce information on the upgrading, markets and consumption of fish, game and reindeer meat
- To study recreational activities and tourism based on animal and natural resources
- To seek solution models for social conflicts related to the use of fish, game and reindeer resources
- To compile statistics on the fish economy, hunting catches and damage caused by game animals
Aquaculture
- To be responsible for maintaining valuable fish stocks that are in decline and under threat by means of farming production and gene banks
- To promote the development of the fish farming sector with product development and expert work at the national and international levels
- To maintain farming production that ensures the fulfilment and implementation of governmental stocking obligations and other stockings requiring indigenous stocks
