Economy and the markets

The total amount of fish produced in Finland annually is about 150 million kilos. The total value of domestic catch and production of fish was about EUR 115 million in 2005, calculated with producer prices for fish.

In addition to this, about 100 million kilos of fish and fish products are imported into Finland. About 10-25 million kilos are exported. In 2005, the value of the imported fish was EUR 170 million and the value of exports was about EUR 15 million.

A significant percentage of the fish which comes onto the markets is used to make feed for fur-bearing animals. In 2005, Finns ate about 5 kilos of domestic fish (fillet weight) and about 8 kilos of imported fish (product weight) per person.
